“Feather Star” by Ali Baudoin. This sculpture was first installed at EvCC in 1978 in the old Trojan Student Union building. The creator of this piece, Ali Baudoin, shared in his artist’s statement that “the visual concept for the sculpture originated from a type of crinoid - a flowerlike sea animal known as a feather star. Of particular interest in relation to the sculpture are their pointed feather-like arms that bend and twist with the ocean currents.” Tragically, the Trojan Student Union building was destroyed in 1987 by an arsonist fire. The Feather Star sculpture survived this and was eventually placed back in front of the current Student Union building named after Gary Parks, the fireman who lost his life to that fire in 1987. Jeanne Leader shares that this sculpture can now be thought of as a representation of a Phoenix rising from the ashes. She expands on this, “The Feather Star has become a symbol of renewal and rebirth for the college. It is the inspiration for the EvCC logo, which consists of three spires backed by a rising sun.”
