Colin Burns

Colin Burns, Staff Writer

What interests you about journalism?
I love that I can get unfailingly interesting stories from just talking to regular people about their lives, and being able to convey these stories- especially when they’re of social or political relevance- through writing. I love the act of writing and tinkering with a sentence so I can get it to say what I want in the most effective way possible.
What is an issue or topic you are passionate about?
Social justice in general, but specifically the criminal justice system. It’s a hot button issue right now, and for good reason. In addition to the behemoth that is systemic racism, we have a tendency to treat criminals like animals. A specific issue I’m passionate about is giving not only felons the right to vote, but the right and ability of convicts to vote from prison.
Who are your favorite writers?
My favorite writer is Thomas Pynchon.
 What is your motto?
“Keep cool, but care.” Thomas Pynchon
