7 Must-see Marvel Movies to Watch Before Avengers: Endgame

A quick guide to what films to watch before you go to see Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame is arriving this Friday. It is the culmination of the 11-year long Marvel Cinematic Universe. It may seem intimidating to get caught up on the 22-film Marvel library, but this should help. Here are the seven most important films to watch before tackling Avengers: Endgame.

7. Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange actually plays quite the role in Infinity War, and his solo film sets him up for that role well. Being the first magic-based Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character, he’s the introduction point into the world of Marvel magic. His movie introduces a few important concepts like the multiverse and, most important to Endgame, the Time Stone. In spite of being snapped by Thanos, Doctor Strange’s contributions to the Avengers greater universe are important enough to merit seeing his film.

6. The Avengers

The Avengers is the first movie in this Avengers quadrilogy that will be wrapped up with Endgame. It’s the first time the core six Avengers meet and interact, and will no doubt inform some of the events in Endgame. Avengers also has the most Infinity Stones in one movie before Infinity War, with both Loki’s Scepter and the Tesseract being Infinity Stones that would later be used by Thanos.

5. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Age of Ultron introduces the Vision and Scarlet Witch, both of whom had pivotal roles in Infinity War. It’s also the movie that introduces the fractures in the Avengers that would lead to the events of Civil War, so watching this before that movie is important. This movie also has Thor leave earth to search for the Infinity Stones, which introduces the concept of the stones to most of the Avengers for the first time.

4. Thor: Ragnarok

Ragnarok establishes a new status quo for both Hulk and Thor, as well as introduces Valkyrie, who will be in Endgame. The movie also explains how Thor and Hulk got into space and gives them new twists on their characters that will play into their characterization in Endgame.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy is worth seeing just to see, but it actually lays down a ton of framework for the MCU as a whole. It is the second movie to feature Thanos in any roll, though he is just a cameo. Guardians also spends some time explaining the Infinity Stones which will help with understanding why Thanos is so powerful.

2. Captain America: Civil War

The third movie in the Captain America trilogy, Civil War also happens to be the most important third movie in any of the MCU trilogies so far. It introduces major characters in Spider-Man and Black Panther and gives the Avengers team a new status quo. Hopefully, the wounds from Civil War will be a part of the plot in Endgame, because we all want to see the heroes be friends again.

1. Avengers: Infinity War

While previous Avengers movies have been loose sequels to each other, Avengers: Endgame is a direct sequel to Infinity War, making it the most essential of the MCU films to see beforehand. While not the introduction of Thanos, Infinity War is the first time he gets the spotlight and we get to see what he’s all about. Infinity War also gives viewers the opportunity to see all their favorite characters and teams interact with each other in new ways.

Ultimately, watching these movies is a good way to get prepared to go see Avengers: Endgame. Black Panther and Captain Marvel barely missed the list, so feel free to go seek out the rest of the movies before or after seeing Avengers: Endgame.
