Sunset Overdrive: Awesome, Zombie-Killing Extravaganza
“Sunset Overdrive” delivers a visually stunning orgy of zombie-killing adrenalin-fueled insanity to gamers in desperate need of diversity. Who remembers “Jet Set Radio Future?” What about “Crash Bandicoot?” Well, developers of the latter recently released a game that’s very similar, with so much more violence thrown in.
“Sunset Overdrive” is an open world, zombie-killing extravaganza that has the player running around the fictional post-apocalyptic world of Sunset City. The city has been plunged into chaos by the mutational effects of the hottest new energy drink “Overcharge.” The new drink causes most of the population to become terrifying monsters that the player must kill.
The game feels a lot like “Jet Set Radio Future,” enough so that if you liked that game you really should just go pick up “Sunset Overdrive.” Don’t even bother reading the rest of this. Your character moves around the city by performing spectacular superhuman feats like using your shoes to grind across telephone wires or bouncing off the hoods of cars like trampolines. All while firing ridiculous weapons at the teeming zombies below.
Did I mention the weapons? The weapon customization is insane. The level of complexity that you can achieve really makes finding weapon parts worthwhile. Super-cooled freezing teddy bear launcher sound like fun? That’s just the tip of the iceberg (Ba dum psh!).
Customization doesn’t stop at the weapons though; the character customization is also extremely rich and rewarding. There are the basic aesthetic changes that you can make to your character like clothes and haircut. There are also character modifications called amps that will dramatically change the way you play the game by giving you powerful boosts in combat.
The visuals of the game are probably one of its most attractive features. The game looks like unicorn throw-up on an old punk magazine with the saturation turned up. This game pops! Beautiful scenery combined with dramatic animations and bright colorful visuals make this game one of the most fun to look at games of the year.
There are dozens of fully voiced and animated characters to interact with and they all have something funny to say. “Sunset Overdrive” is hilarious. Characters are well thought out, well written, well animated, well voiced and just well… fantastic.
“Sunset Overdrive” is brilliant. It brings something new to the table that gamers really haven’t seen for a long time. It is the kind of game that you are sad to see end. Hopefully we’ll see more games like it in the near future. Verdict: Get it.
