What: 38 dead, 155 wounded in Istanbul bombing

Turkish prime minister Binali Yıldırım declared a day of mourning Dec. 11 after two explosions near a soccer stadium. A Kurdish militant group later claimed responsibility for the attack. Istanbul has been in an enforced state of emergency since the July 15 coup attempt of last year against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
What: Russian envoy to Turkey assassinated

Ambassador Andrey Karlov was fatally shot at a photography exhibit by Turkish police officer Mevlut Mert Altintas, and his assassination was caught live. Altinas was heard shouting, “Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria!” on camera. Leaders of Russia and Turkey vowed to not let the assassination damage the improved relations between the two countries.

What: Fifth water main breaks in one week

The break was due to freezing and caused several homes in the Delta neighborhood to go without service. The city assured residents that the water was safe to drink despite any off-color. Most of the previous water main snaps occurred in cast iron pipes from the 1940s.
What: Worst flu epidemic in six years

The Washington State Department of Health reported as of Jan. 13, 46 people have died from the flu. Pierce County rates at the top of the list with 14 deaths while Snohomish County has reported 8. Of all the cases, 38 were of the ages 65 and older.

What: 5 killed and 8 wounded in Florida airport shooting

The shooter, Esteban Santiago, 26, targeted the baggage claim area of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. He was found with his military ID and a handgun by officers after he ran out of ammunition and spreadeagled on the floor.
What: President Donald Trump’s inauguration

The 45th president of the United States, President Trump made history as the oldest president to be sworn in. Mrs. Trump is now the second foreign-born First Lady, the first being John Quincy Adam’s wife. Protests such as the Women’s March occurred in the capital during and after Inauguration Day.
