EvCC is Bringing the Groove with Glow into the Night
There’s a school dance just around the corner and it isn’t a high school prom.
EvCC’s Glow into the Night will be held at the Walt Price Student Fitness Center on March 18, 7-10 p.m. True to the name, black lights will illuminate the dance floor. Two body painters will be on staff to paint one side of the face or one upper arm. A photo booth will be provided off to the side of the room.
There will be refreshments, glow sticks, and most importantly: music provided by two DJs.
And it’s all free.
All you need is an EvCC student ID. What’s more, a group can be admitted using only one ID card. This group must be reasonably sized, so don’t try pulling any shenanigans. But other than that, come ready to throw down your mad dance skills or simply hang in the back.
“The idea is to celebrate with friends after finals,” Student LIFE Special Events Coordinator Linh Le said. “For me, I would think this will be different [from other dances] because you can see your friends. It’s like a rave but safe.”
Le has been an EvCC student for five quarters and will be attending Glow into the Night. It will be her first school dance. “Of course I’m going!” she said with a smile.
Students are encouraged to wear white clothes for the black lights. Informal wear is strongly recommended for dancing, but don’t be nasty.
The dance theme was picked through surveys handed out to students. Last year was comic-con, but attendance was low. “I think it was because we didn’t advertise it strong enough,” Le said.
This year, EvCC is trying something new. Instead of hiring a DJ, iExperia is supplying the music as well as a video system. The company is a self-described “extrasensory nightlife experience” and has headed the dances of colleges around the nation. You can check out their website at www.iexperiainvasion.com.
Student LIFE will be preparing the basic stage for iExperia to work their magic. The room will be pitch dark, and the dance floor will have enough space for students to move freely. “We need to make it not look like a gym,” Le said.
For every college event, planning takes at least one month. But for this dance, preparations began as early as the beginning of Winter Quarter. The contract was done over the break by Le and Lindsay Hudson, Student LIFE advisor. “It’s a long process,” Le said. “But Lindsay knows what she’s doing.”
Student LIFE Administrative Assistant Richele Blair also had a hand in organizing the event. “I think it’s an awesome opportunity to connect with others outside of a classroom,” Blair said.
Don’t let past attendance deter you from going to the dance.
“Let loose,” Blair said. “Get out there and let it go. Have fun.”
