Trojans Softball Wins 4-1 in Game 2 of Doubleheader to Sweep Shoreline

The EvCC Trojans Softball team beat the Shoreline Dolphins 4-1 in the second game of the doubleheader on Friday, April 6 at Gaffney Field to sweep the series.

The starting pitcher for the Trojans in Game 2 was Amanda Lee. The Dolphins opted to use their sophomore pitcher Hope Lawrence again.

Through 3 innings, the Trojans had just three hits and stranded three runners on base. Through that time, Lee had the Dolphins off-balance.

The game opened up in the bottom fourth inning. The Dolphins brought in Taylor Mannino as a relief pitcher after Lawrence pitched three scoreless innings. Taylor Arndt led the inning off with a leadoff walk then stole second base.

Trojans catcher Whitney Harris got to first base on a dropped third strike and center fielder Olivia Berkman hit an RBI double to left-center field, which scored Arndt, making it 1-0 Trojans.

Lee hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the first out but Harris tagged up from third and scored making it 2-0. Trojans left fielder Morgan Black hit a flyball into a shallow center field that neither Shoreline’s shortstop or center fielder could make a play on, which resulted in an RBI single. Berkan came into score, making it 3-0.

The Dolphins would score one run in the top of the sixth with two outs when Lee walked Arielle Holmes with the bases loaded, making it 3-1, Trojans. Lee took care of the next batter for her fifth strikeout of the ball game.

The Trojans would score one more run in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of Della Willem stealing home on a wild pitch. The score was now 4-1, Trojans.

“It was a great team effort,” said Trojan Head Coach Randy Smith.  “When Amanda was struggling a little bit, her defense bailed her out and her and Whitney (Harris) did a great job at mixing her speeds and location, keeping batters off balance”

Among the top performers, Amanda Lee pitched a complete game, pitching 7 innings and giving up just 1 earned a run, and striking out 5. Shortstop Morgan Dedrick went 2-4 at the plate with two singles.

The Trojans next doubleheader will be on April 10 against the Edmonds Community College Tritons at Gaffney Field.  First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and Game 2 is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Game times are subject to change due to the finishing of a game or due to inclement weather.
