Listen Up! A Review: Katy Perry’s “Chained to the Rhythm”
Oh Katy Perry, you didn’t even release a full album and you are still on the charts. On Feb. 9, Katy Perry released her first single following her last album, Prism, which was released in 2013. The pop star has had a life revolving around music since she was little.
At a young age, Perry sang in church, which led to her pursuing a career in gospel music before breaking out in the pop world. She has released a total of five albums, (not including live session recordings, tour records and acoustic remakes). Along with this, she has appeared and voice acted in multiple movies.
After the release of Prism in 2013, it seems Perry took a musical hiatus by not releasing an album or even a single until this year. Her new hit, “Chained to the Rhythm”, is currently holding No. 3 on the billboard music charts.
Now, if you ask me, I say that this is the worst song she has made to date. First off, the name is cheesy and sounds like a child star trying to break into the world, which alone steers me away from the song. Second, the lyrics are odd and frankly sound as if a toddler wrote them for her. Maybe one did? Finally, the music video is just plain creepy. I mean, making tiny lasagna with a hamster bouncing across the lyrics – who thought that was a decent idea?
With lyrics such as “stumbling around like a wasted zombie” and “so comfortable, we’re living in a bubble bath”, the song has no connection to the real world. This makes it hard to listen to and enjoy. Overall, this single made my brain go to mush and my ears want to jump off my head and run away, earning it a 1 out of 5 stars. Let’s be honest: that 1 star comes just from the fact that if it was on the radio we all would know the words no matter how much we hated it, because that’s what Katy Perry does.
