Listen Up! A Review: Lukas Graham’s “Blue Album”
Mixing R&B, funk and soulful pop, Lukas Graham recently struck a musical landmine in America. Denmark born Graham has hit the US radio this past few months with his song “7 Years,” and boy did he hit it with a bang.
Graham and his friends (now his band) started back in 2011, posting a few original songs on YouTube, which soon gained hundreds of thousands of views. In 2012, his self titled album was released, making a mark on the Denmark charts, and was followed two years later in June of 2015 with “Lukas Graham (Blue Album),” which with no promotion maintained 19 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Danish music charts. If that’s not talent I don’t know what is. The album was later released in the states on April 1, 2016, after “7 Years” major growth in popularity, which is where he made a name for himself in America.
There are many up’s, down’s, feelings, thoughts and stories in the lyrics of his work. Songs such as “Mama Said,” which tells the tale of when he was young and wasn’t in the most fortunate of families. Lines like “why we never traveled to exotic lands” quickly followed by “our kind of people had a bed for the night and it was ok.” This connects with the listener, someone who wasn’t born into money and has/will have to create their own path into whatever they choose.
Overall, his music is quite a wide mix of genres and can appeal to many different people with various musical desires, which earns him a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. If you’re new to his music I would recommend “Drunk in the Morning” and “Strip no More” to get a feel for his musical style and heartfelt lyrics.
