Sex Week: The Female Orgasm

Julia Smiljanic

Sex Week, hosted in Jackson Conference Center, presents a three day event with everything from EvCC’s traditional closing sex fair through a seminar about the female orgasm.

The big-O: everyone wants one. Concern stems from the one-sided education on orgasm. When it comes to sex, society tends to focus on the male orgasm. From the typical public school sex education, the porn industry, and the general public, it can be hard to get educated on the female orgasm. This year’s fourth annual #sexweek pushed the boundaries of social norms, presenting a seminar on the inner-workings of the female orgasms.

During the learning processes that comes with sexuality most everyone experiences that awkward moments. None are immune, not even the professional sex educators of this presentation, Lindsay Fram and Marshall Miller. The female orgasm is elusive and difficult to spot in the wild.

Fram and Miller’s presentation on the Female Orgasm covered everything there is to know about the big-O: how-to from start to finish, penetration, toys, consent, and non-binary relationships. The presentation also covered critique and concern on the issues that sex-ed is taught.

Miller pondered the idea: “We’re going to teach drivers ed like we teach sex ed. Driving is very dangerous, so just don’t do it till after marriage. And if you do it make sure you wear your seatbelt. And now we’re going to practice putting a seatbelt on a banana.”

“Penetration: the topic we really want to go deep on” presenters teased; sex means something different to everyone. Sex does not have to be penetration. For lesbians there is no penetrative sex, for some in heterosexual relationships, there is penetration due to choice, or medical condition related discomfort.

Miller and Fram performed a survey, finding out how best to stimulate the elusive female orgasm. Women ranked the top producers of female orgasm as stimulation with her own hand, however, the favorite way to reach orgasm was found to be oral sex. Who’s receiving the most pleasurable and frequent of female orgasms? Lesbians. Presenters issued a happy reminder that both ladies and gents have the same equipment: fingers and lips. So with the proper practice of technique, every woman, and her partner (if she chooses) can appreciate the female orgasm.
