Cop-Comedy Duo Takes Hollywood in “The Nice Guys:” A Review

May 31, 2016

Shane Black’s newest film “The Nice Guys” starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe will leave the audience in gut busting laughter and pulse pounding action.

After famous adult-film actress Misty Mountains is killed in a car accident, speculation arises when a private investigator gets a tip Mountains is still alive. While following the lead, conman P.I Holland March (played by Gosling) comes across an anti-political activist named Amelia who looks dangerously close to the deceased Misty. On the other hand of the story, Amelia (played by Margaret Qualley) pays badass-for-hire Jackson Healy (played by Russell Crowe) to protect her and get her pursuers off her trail. When the two intertwine, Amelia suddenly goes missing.

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect with “The Nice Guys.” Other than a few funny jokes or short moments of Russell Crowe badassery, there wasn’t much to go off of with the plot. Now to be fair, the “cop dramedy” vibe of the trailer was spot on to the story with a tasteful blend of action, drama, and comedy. Some jokes fell short and especially out of place. The subtle shock values and comedy in the film were better than I expected it to be. With as many police-duo comedies coming out as  super hero movies the last few years, it’s easy to disregard the genre as it has become bland and less unique. It was interesting to see such a compatible duo with former heartthrob Ryan Gosling alongside action star Russell Crowe. Their chemistry was spot on with how much their opposite styles seemed to go hand in hand.

Without giving too much of the story away, I would give “The Nice Guys” a 3.5/5 stars for exceeding my expectations from the get go, and working to put a new spin on the buddy-cop comedy movie genre, and I hope we get a sequel soon. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the 1970’s style of cop movies who is looking for a fun ride. Just don’t bring the kids.
