When the Smoke Clears which Side Will You Be On? “Captain America Civil War”: A Review

May 19, 2016

The Russo Brothers’ have done it again in their newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with “Captain America: Civil War.” The film takes place after the events of his previous film the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as well as “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The movie shares the same name as one of the series in Captain America’s comic book storyline where he faces off against team Iron Man. For fans of the comic, be wary of this adaptation of “Civil War” because the Russo Brothers’ chose to take the movie storyline into a different direction. This is not necessarily a bad decision, more so it is just different than I had hoped.

In what critics and audiences are calling “Avengers 2.5,” “Captain America: Civil War” did an excellent job living up to the hype that this film had built up over the last few years. “Civil War” is put into effect after Iron Man is confronted of the damages and casualties that are lost whenever the Avengers come in to “save the day.” He is morally obligated to find a way to keep the Avengers in check. He says, “If we can’t accept limitations, then we are no better than the bad guys.”Captain America, on the other hand, believes to uphold his freedom and to help wherever he feels needed. After clashing personalities and ideals eventually The Avengers splits into two groups and are forced to fight one another in what is easily the coolest fight scene in the MCU.

What really sold this movie for me was that I was never able to stick to one side of each fight. It is a product of great writing as you can find right and wrong with both points of view, which really adds a lot of depth to the movie itself. The movie did have some faults at times when it felt drawn out at times. Admittedly, I felt a little bored at various times throughout the movie. But, what wiped the boredom away was the introduction of new superheroes, and my personal favorites of the movie Black Panther and Spider-Man. After what felt like trial and error over the years for a perfect  cinematic Spider-Man, I think the MCU has finally found its golden boy in a very convincing Peter Parker. That’s all I can say about him, because his role in the movie is just too good to spoil… so I guess you’ll just have to go see it.

In the end, I would give “Captain America: Civil War” a 4/5 stars for its exciting action sequences and fantastic introduction of new characters. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Marvel movies and comic book buffs! But when the dusts settles… Who’s side will you be on?
