Club Corner: MEChA
As new students try to adapt to the new environment we call college, getting used to a new campus may seem a little intimidating. Joining clubs are a great way to meet people with similar interests as you. It’s a super quick way to make friends and get involved on campus, soon enough all the faces surrounding you become familiar and campus starts to feel like a second home. Lucky for EvCC, this campus has over 40 clubs, every student should be able to find a club that interests them.
MEChA is one of those many clubs on campus that, it stands for the chican@ student movement of Aztlan. This club focuses on community service and student outreach. This year Esther Moss, Program Coordinator at the Diversity and Equity center, and Omar Marquez, Program Manager at the Diversity and Equity center, are the clubs co-advisors.
Marquez may be new to the campus but he’s making lots of connections and quick. According to Marquez, he hopes to have the club members interested in community service partner up with Americorps, this may range from building houses through Habitat for Humanity to mentoring and tutoring for local middle schools and high schools.
Although it says “chican@ student movement” this club has open arms for anyone on campus that is interested in joining. MEChA meets on Wednesdays, in Baker 104 from 12:30-1:30. Anyone that wants to participate in community service, learning about “the movement,” and looking to embrace their roots is welcome to join.
