Dear Clipper: Questions about EvCC
During first couple of days at EvCC, students get academic help from ambassadors at the orientation. However, it is natural to be curious about trivial things that instructors and peers do not usually say. To help out students with this, The Clipper has taken questions from EvCC students, especially from new comers, and have tried to provide the best solutions and directions.
Q: I do not have Microsoft office and I need it for assignments and essays. Is there any way to get it for free? –Gary Weinberg
A: Yes, EvCC provides free Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint and so on for students to do their assignments without any difficulty, so that they can perform well in classes. On individual computers, students could go to the official web site of Microsoft (www.microsoftstore.com), click on “for students,” and all that needed for confirmation is a student email that is provided by the school. In case some students may struggle with where to find the right page, EvCC’s librarians are always willing to help out students find the right URL.
Q: Where is Tutoring Center located? Also, I do they teach engineering and Excel too. –Carlos Burlesson
A: EvCC has an outstanding extracurricular studies department known as Tutoring, it was further expanded out for broader space and access to a larger staff. Now, there is a newly established center located at Baker 112 with a larger body of teaching staff. “Yes, we have tutors for engineering too who can also teach how to use excel at the computer lab placed right next to the center,” said Rachael Kim, a former staff member of Tutoring Center.
Q: As an international student, I am having trouble with housing. Where can I get help?
A: EvCC has a variety of housing options that students can choose from- home stay, on campus apartment, and off campus apartment. Any of the choices could open opportunities for international students to gain social and communication skills. For home stay, EvCC works with three different companies whose services, prices, and details vary from one another – Intercultural Home Stays & Services Inc, .American Home Stay Network, and USA International, Inc. EvCC’s current on campus apartment complex, Loma Vista, is a 24-hour secured apartment located across Whitehorse Hall near the bus stop which means classes are just a few steps away. For more details about housing, students may visit international office located at Monte Cristo 221.
Q: How can I get financial aid from the school? –Michael Elliot
A: For students who are not able to pay tuition and fees, EvCC provides extensive financial aid system. Applying for financial aid can be done even before being accepted to EvCC. First, students must complete the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal Application for returning students. Once the Department of Education has received and processed your FAFSA, it takes a few business days for EvCC financial Department to receive your information. The fastest way is to provide an email address on FAFSA. That, way, students will receive a Student Aid Report sent to email. When EvCC has received your processed application, the Financial Aid Department will email information requesting any additional documents necessary to prepare your file for review. For more help with financial aid, students may visit Financial Referral Center located on the third floor of Parks Student Union building
