EvCC Students’ Style
March 2, 2017
To some, fashion isn’t that important to them. But to others, fashion is a way of expression and an art form. There’s also no right or wrong answer when it comes to fashion.
So, with that in mind, I found three fashionable EvCC students 0n campus and asked them the same five questions, to which they all answered differently:
Taylor Anumodu
Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?
Comfortability is key for Anumodu. “Honestly, I love the whole, like, skateboard style, too. (But), it’s more (about) comfort.” She also mentioned that her brother, an art major in Philadelphia, occasionally helps her out, too. “I get a lot of my inspiration from him.”
What are your favorite stores to shop at?
“Wherever I (can) get a deal,” Anumodu said overall. Forever 21, thrift stores, Nike and Love Culture are just some of her favorite places to find great deals at. “I love thrift stores because you can find pieces for, like, really cheap.”
What does fashion mean to you?
“Fashion means expression,” Anumodu said. “So, basically, expressing yourself with the way you dress.”
How does your style reflect who you are?
In Anumodu’s opinion, it’s about “the way you, like, carry yourself.” Using sweatpants as an example, she said, “if you wear, like, sweatpants or something like that, (it) means you like comfort.”
What’s a clothing item you can’t live without, and why?
“I cannot live without ripped jeans,” Anumodu said, adding that they go with anything. She explained how you could wear a dressy top “and make it kinda like a preppy thing,” or “put it with, like, an oversize shirt – make it into, like, a grunge look, maybe.”
Tomomi Nakamura
Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?
“I love American fashion,” Nakamura said, adding that one of her celebrity inspirations is Selena Gomez. “I also like Japanese fashion.” Being an international student from Japan, she’s found herself influenced by both American and Japanese fashion.
What are your favorite stores to shop at?
Nakamura’s favorite stores are H&M, Forever 21 and a Japanese clothing brand called Uniqlo. “It’s my favorite,” she said.
What does fashion mean to you?
For Nakamura, she believes that fashion allows her to “enjoy what (she) wants to wear.” She considers fashion a hobby of hers.
How does your style reflect who you are?
When it comes to Nakamura’s own personal style, her thought process is, “it’s really cute so I wanna wear it,” or “I wanna look like that.”
What’s a clothing item you can’t live without, and why?
“I like Converse,” Nakamura said, adding that she also prefers to wear jeans over skirts.
Ly Nguyen
Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?
“I get a lot of inspiration from old Hollywood photoshoots,” Nguyen said, adding that she’s also influenced by a lot of vintage, referring to the 1920’s as an example. “I get a lot of stuff from consignment shops because I like form-fitting things, but it’s really hard to find form-fitting things because I’m really skinny,” she admitted. “People were smaller back in the day.”
What are your favorite stores to shop at?
“I do a lot of shopping online,” Nguyen said. “I’m pretty good at finding stuff on Amazon as well, though that’s always a hit or miss.” She also mentioned that she does a lot of scouring of consignment shops. “It’s a treasure hunt. When I was a kid, I use to do a lot of treasure hunts so this is like the grown-up version of that.”
What does fashion mean to you?
Nguyen believes fashion is like an art form. “I do a lot of art, and fashion is just another way of doing (it).” She also refers to fashion like a puzzle. When she wakes up in the morning, she asks herself, “What goes with which?” And because she only has one style, it’s easy for her to create her outfits.
How does your style reflect who you are?
“I’ve got a very matured style. People tend to think I’m a lot older than I am,” Nguyen said, adding that she’s only 16. She recalled a time when she was just wearing a sweater and a pencil skirt and she was led into the bar area of a restaurant before she knew what was happening. Nguyen concluded that her style is overall “neat and clean and often times minimalistic.”
What’s a clothing item you can’t live without, and why?
“I always have leather boots with me,” Nguyen said. “I’m a big fan of leather because (it’s) and it’s pretty much timeless.” She also mentioned trench coats as a clothing item she couldn’t live without. “Trench coats and boots are a really good combination.”
