Key and Peele Take the Big Screen by Storm in “Keanu”

May 12, 2016

Written by Jordan Peele and directed by Peter Atencio, the former MADtv comedy duo Key and Peele take to the big screen in their first film “Keanu.” After huge success on MADtv, Comedy Central decided to take the two on and give them their own sketch comedy show that has so far been a cable television masterpiece. That success has led to their first feature length film, starring the world’s cutest cat. Period.

After being recently dumped by his girlfriend, Rel (played by Jordan Peele) is left in a spiraling depression. When everything seems bleak, Rel comes across a kitten at his doorstep, and things start falling into place. The kitten is named Keanu. When Rel’s home is broken into and ransacked everything seems to be intact, but only Keanu is missing. Rel and his cousin Clarence (Played by Keegan-Michael Key) must infiltrate the crime lord’s headquarters to try and rescue his cat by impersonating vicious killers.

Now, going into this movie I had little to no expectations. A couple of good recommendations from friends was about all I got out of “Keanu” before heading to the theater. My skepticism was based on the fact that comedy television stars are usually a hit or miss when trying out the big screen. Boy, was I wrong. Keanu was the most whole-hearted and funniest movie experiences I have had this year since “Deadpool.” The chemistry between Key and Peele was one that can be rivaled with the more well-known buddy duos such as Seth Rogen and James Franco and Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.

With an excellent blend of comedy and action, this movie never felt boring or poorly paced, which was a nice change for once. It became very easy to root for these guys because they are put against all odds to save Rel’s cat. Keanu was more than a cat to him, though, and Peele’s acting range made the audience believe that Keanu was more than a cat, but was more so his family.

I would give “Keanu” a 4/5 stars for far surpassing my expectations and giving the audience and myself an honest laugh. I would recommend “Keanu” to anyone who is a fan of Key and Peele and wants to watch a comedy movie that relies less on raunchy and dirty humor and more towards practical humor.
