You walk down to the first floor of Whitehorse Hall, turn the corner and hear some mellow music playing. You will likely be greeted by the barista at the Bargreen’s coffee stand with something like, “Hi my friend, what can I get for you today?”.

That barista is none other than Stachio Glowaski, 23, who serves coffee to EvCC students 40 hours per week. Before he started working at the Bargreen’s coffee stand, Stachio started going to school here four years ago. He attended EvCC after he graduated high school and enrolled in Fire Sciences classes.

Glowaski came to EvCC with a dream in mind, “I’ve wanted to be a firefighter ever since I was a little kid” he said. Now that he’s working at Bargreen’s full time, the question arises, why isn’t he a firefighter now?

“Asthmatics are automatically disqualified,” Glowaski said. His entire life changed all at once. If he went on to be a firefighter, he would not be able to safely have the job with asthma.

Glowaski wasn’t going to let this get him down, so he searched for a second option. He eventually saw an opening position Bargreen’s and applied, thinking it would be convenient to stay local.

Glowaski got the job about a year ago, and he remains at EvCC because he enjoys the interactions he gets with his loyal customers. Glowaski said, “I get a bunch of cool stories about people’s lives,” He says he can relate to students because they are close in age, and he knows what it’s like to be a student here.

Nathan Senff, a student at EvCC says, “He’s very personable; he’s somebody you can talk to. He’s always optimistic – he’s very about you as the customer. [Last Thursday] he’s like, ‘Oh, what are you gonna do this weekend?’”

When it comes to the nature of the conversations he has, Glowaski says, “I get asked about my name a lot.” Glowaski says that his name is Polish, “My parents said they found it in a book, but I’ve never seen it anywhere – they were probably like…pistachios? Hey, Stachio!”

Stachio Glowaski is your go-to for coffee when you need it. He says he likes to think of his job as if he’s running the entire school by fueling everyone with caffeine, “-whether that be the administration, the students, and sometimes myself.”

As for the future, right now he doesn’t have a concrete plan. “I’m just waiting for something to happen to where I can try to [be a firefighter] again” he said. “It’s never too late to go back to school.”
